Where the name comes from
Peal, from appeal: a bell rung to call people.
What a peal is
A peal is a performance of at least 5,040 changes rung true: no stop, no row repeated, and on tower bells about three hours of ringing. The word descends from “appeal”, a bell rung to call people.
A change is one row of bells becoming the next. Ringers learn a method from a diagram of those rows, in which each bell’s path through the changes is a line and one bell’s path is picked out. Drawn together, the lines make a lattice.
What we borrowed, and what we left behind
We borrowed three things: the name; the diagram, which is the lattice drawn behind the home page; and one change, two bells swapping places, which is the mark.
No change-ringing word appears anywhere in the application or a portal: not “peal”, not “method”, not “touch”, not “conductor”, not “rounds”. The product uses ordinary words instead: workspace, member, issue, view, board, portal, customer, company, request.
“Board” is on that list by coincidence, not metaphor. It already means a column layout in every tool like this one, and it means the same thing here.
There is no bell anywhere in the brand: not as an icon, not for notifications, not on the logo. The Inbox is a tray. What the product borrows from a tower is the record of the changes, not the sound.
