Companies and customers
A customer is a person who signs into a portal. Customers are never workspace members and are never billed, on any plan, at any number.
A company is a customer organization inside a portal. Company visibility — “everyone at Acme can see this request” — is scoped to it.
How a customer arrives
Section titled “How a customer arrives”| Access mode | How |
|---|---|
| Invite only | A member selects Invite customer and enters an email address and a company |
| Domain allowlist | Anyone with a verified email address at a listed domain signs in and is placed in that domain’s company |
| Open | Anyone signs in; their first request goes to the hold queue |
Sign-in is a 6-digit code sent by email, or a sign-in link. There are no passwords in a portal.
Companies are assigned, never chosen
Section titled “Companies are assigned, never chosen”A customer never picks their own company. It is set by the invitation, or by the verified email domain when the access mode is Domain allowlist. Move someone by changing the company on their row in Customers.
This is deliberate: company decides who can read a request, so letting a customer choose it would let them read other people’s.
The manager role
Section titled “The manager role”A customer can be a customer or a manager.
| Customer | Manager | |
|---|---|---|
| Submit requests | Yes | Yes |
| See their own requests | Yes | Yes |
| See their company’s requests | Only those set to Company or Public | All of them, whatever the visibility |
| Invite other customers into their company | No | Yes |
Give the manager role to the customer-side lead who is accountable for what their organization asked for.
Removing a customer
Section titled “Removing a customer”Remove customer ends their access immediately. Their requests stay, and the attribution line on the issues in GitHub is left as it is.
When a customer asks to be deleted
Section titled “When a customer asks to be deleted”A customer can select Delete my account in the portal, or you can do it for them. Deletion removes the portal account and rewrites every attribution line Pealboard authored to “a former customer”. It does not delete the issue: the issue belongs to the workspace and to GitHub, and the words a member wrote are not the customer’s to remove.
A customer can also select Download my data and receive their requests and comments as JSON.
